The Best Fashion Trends at the Oscars

Feb 29, 2016

Golden Oscar statuettes might be being handed out inside the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles right now, but we’re still pondering the many showstopping dresses on tonight’s red carpet. From the high slits sported by Rachel McAdams and Rooney Mara to Jennifer Lawrence’s lacy number, there are plenty of looks that broke the mold for awards season style. Here, we highlight the best trends from the Academy Awards.

Lacy Ladies

Pulled straight from the Spring runways is the trend toward lace paneling worn by Jennifer Lawrence and Rooney Mara on tonight’s red carpet. Mara’s custom Givenchy couture gown recalled the soigné lingerie-inspired looks of the house’s Spring show, while Lawrence’s black Dior couture gown was something of a departure from the actress’s typically bright ensembles—not that we’re complaining. With corset boning built in—very much a trend of Fall 2016 when you consider the runways of Prada and Oscar de la Renta—Lawrence’s dress flattered her gorgeous body.

Pretty in Pastel

Stars opted to show their softer side in pastel dresses this evening. Cate Blanchett’s floral-trimmed Armani Privé gown was a decidedly sweet choice for the repeat nominee, and the cascading blooms spiraled around her bodice and skirt. Alicia Vikander, too, also chose a pale hue, and the yellow custom Louis Vuitton dress had a bubble hemline with crystal embellishment. Presenter Emily Blunt chose to highlight her baby bump in a rose-color Prada gown, while Daisy Ridley wore a blue gray Chanel Haute Couture, a sleek choice for the first-time attendee.

Ready for Rouge

Hello, ladies in red! Charlize Theron, ever a pro at Oscar dressing, chose a vibrant rouge Dior couture dress with plunging décolletage, while Olivia Munn opted for a one-shouldered Stella McCartney. Let’s just say matching the red carpet has never looked so good.

Legs for Days

Angelina Jolie Pitt may have started the trend for high-slit dresses many moons ago, but this year’s attendees have perfected it. Nominee Rachel McAdams showed off her toned legs in an emerald August Getty Atelier dress with a lengthy train. In a similar vein was Sophie Turner, who wore a silvery column dress with a high cut up to her thigh. Rooney Mara subverted the trend toward slits with a cut-front Givenchy gown, while Jennifer Garner alluded to, rather than flaunted, the slit in her Rene Caovilla dress.
